CERTIFIED AS A WOOL CARE SPECIALIST THROUGH IICRC:
As a wool care specialist I recommend cleaning of oriental rugs and custom wool rugs every 3-5 years depending on traffic. In high traffic areas, e.g., a foyer where you may find an oriental runner, sooner than 3 years is recommended.

  • One of the main characteristics of wool oriental rugs is that wool fibers hold a lot of soil and protein. Often rugs appear clean when they are not.
  • Another characteristic of wool fibers is that each filament that makes up a yarn has a hollow cavity where moisture should be present to ensure a soft and conditioned wool fiber. Often, rugs laying indoors for years dry out and require a washing in order to restore proper conditioning.
  • Additionally, wool fibers retain a large amount of moisture when washed and must be dried as quickly as possible.
  • Finally, colors on wool oriental rugs and other wool rugs as well, are usually quite stable. However, before a cleaning they require testing for color fastness and defective dyes. Although dyes that have run or bled onto the field of a rug can be corrected, it often requires some re-dying as well.

  • Oriental Rug Cleaning should not be attempted by the average cleaning tech. The first step after inspection of an oriental rug is dusting the dry soil. Otherwise the cleaning process could very well turn dry soil to wet soil (or muddy water) which can then transfer throughout the entire rug.
  • Secondly, hand washing of oriental rugs, with the proper cleaning solutions, can be done after a thorough dusting. This may take a few days since fringes often require two or three cleanings.
  • Next, Oriental rugs should have a cold water rinse after washing to ensure that all proteins, soils and detergent residues are removed.
  • Oriental rugs, after a thorough washing, should be dried in a climate controlled environment to prevent colors from bleeding on fringe and to prevent mildew.
  • The last step in the process of Cleaning Oriental Rugs is Fluffing fibers and grooming. This should leave wool fibers soft and conditioned.
